Isn't It a New Technique?!

Yes, isn’t it a new technique to start your blog by reviewing another blog? 🤔

I assume your answer is “yes”. But, let me tell you two benefits of this experience before going through the blog under review.

After the first look at a famous blogger’s reflection, i.e., his/her blog, you may get impressed and say: “how I will create mine”. Yet, my evaluation of Ozge’s blog boosts my decision of what I can focus on in my blog. Second, as no one is perfect, I noticed some areas of consideration in her edublog that I may try to avoid while blogging.

Let me introduce you to Ozge.

Ozge Karaoglu

Ozge Karaoglu is a foreign languages department K12 technology integration specialist, a teacher trainer and a course book writer.  She has been recognized by the ELTons Awards, ESU, MEDEA, Microsoft, and Telly Awards for her digital projects. She currently teaches young learners, and she has been developing digital games, animations and mobile applications for her learners. One of her achievements that I like myself, despite being an ESL teacher who teaches adult students not young learners as Ozge J, is developing the ‘Smurfs ELT Series’. This features the Smurfs characters to teach English to young learners. The series are in three levels including 18 readers, 18 workbooks, interactive activities, parents’ guide, posters and teachers’ materials.

In this evaluation to Ozge’s blog, I will review the layout of the blog, its content, the easiness of its navigation and the target audience.

1- Organization and layout:

The previous screenshot shows a well-organized and clear layout used by Ozge. Functionality is a difficult process for many bloggers, yet I think Ozge lands on the right layout that retains more readers. Ozge succeeds in ‘driving the traffic’, i.e., attract her readers through including her achievements such as her mobile applications, publications and her workshops and trainings. Besides, she has a descendant order of the dated posts, highlighted keywords and an attractive title and photo in each post.

2- Content and Features:

This successfully designed picture tells us everything about the content that is well-reflected in Ozge’s posts. The focus of the content is on teaching English through technology and web tools and applications to help educators to develop themselves. One of the things I like in her posts is the way Ozge invites her targeted reader by raising a question that they probably think about.

3- Ease of use and navigation

Despite the fact that you can see the word ’comment’ after each post, you can’t find the comments of the audience on Ozge’s posts. This is a big question mark for the readers as they usually aim at finding an area to share their thoughts with the blogger or other people with the same interest.

4- Target audience

It is easy to find out who is the target audience. Teachers and tech novice and specialist educators are Ozge’s readers and followers. They can find new techniques about using technology from beginner to advanced level in their classes. However, her attention is more on what helps young learner more than adults, a point that needs to be clearer in the description of the blog.

Summary

Navigating many blogs, I have found Ozge’s edublog one of the successful blogs for those who have interest in technology and online learning. If I were Ozge, I would check the link for my e-book that many people are motivated to read. I would also allow my reader to comment on my posts and share my thoughts more with them.

Yes, intros are the sign on the door that either encourages you to enter or to leave before opening it.

  3. Hi Yumna, This is a brilliant start to a new blog - you've taken to it like a 'pro'! Your chosen blog name is witty and clever - alliterative and memorable as well as relevant to the task - great! The text explaining what your blog will offer really shows you understand the potential readers who will want this information quickly and up front. I like the way you introduce Ozge as a person as well as her blog as a resource since both are intertwined. I think the fact that you don't see any comments under some posts is simply that no one has commented (believe it or not this happens to even the most popular bloggers!). It looked to me as if the facility was switched on and working. You own layout and pictures work well together - the subheadings work well to help the reader follow your points. All in all a great first post - well done!
